Build the File Your Family Would Need Tomorrow

The checklist of what someone would have to find if you couldn't tell them, where each thing should live, and the 5 things people always leave out.

Everything important is findable, by you, in your head.

Your insurance, your super, the landlord's number, which account the direct debits come out of, the fact that your car rego is in a different name. You know where all of it is. That knowledge lives in exactly one place.

Nobody builds this file because it feels morbid and it isn't urgent. It's neither. It's a 30-minute admin job that spares someone you love a genuinely awful fortnight.

I built mine in an afternoon. It also made me realise I was paying for 2 insurance policies covering the same thing.

The prompts

1. Start here

The checklist, deliberately without the details.

The family file checklist prompt
Ask me what a partner, parent or close friend would need to find if I couldn't tell them: accounts, documents, insurance, super, subscriptions, who to contact. Give me the checklist, not the details.

2. Go deeper

Where each thing lives and who can reach it.

The storage-and-access prompt
Now tell me where each of these should live and who should know how to get to it, without me storing sensitive numbers anywhere insecure.

3. Bonus

The gaps that cause the most trouble.

The missing-items prompt
Tell me the 5 things people always leave out of a file like this, and which one causes the most trouble when it's missing.

Bonus: Make it yours

Do the version for your parents too. Ask them the questions and write it down while everyone's well.

Never paste account numbers, passwords, ID numbers or codes into a chat window. Claude builds the structure, you fill it in offline in a password manager or on paper.

Do this today: list the 6 accounts nobody but you knows exist. That alone is most of the value.
