Decode Any Contract Before You Sign It

Plain-English translation, the 5 questions to ask first, and what's suspiciously missing.

Fine print is written to be skimmed.

The lease, the phone plan, the gym membership, the freelance agreement. You read the first page properly, glaze over by clause 6, and sign because everyone signs.

The document isn't complicated by accident. It's long, dry and structured so that the parts that matter to you sit past the point where a normal person gives up. That's the design.

I run every contract through this before I sign. Twice it's changed what I asked for.

The prompts

1. Start here

Translates the whole thing and flags what's off.

The plain-English decode
Here's a contract: [paste the text]. Explain it back to me clause by clause in plain English, and flag anything that's unusual, one-sided or worth pushing back on.

2. Go deeper

Turns confusion into 5 specific questions.

The 5-question prompt
Give me the 5 questions I should ask before signing this, and for each one, what a normal answer sounds like versus a red flag.

3. Bonus

The gap nobody points out.

The missing-clauses prompt
Now tell me what this contract doesn't cover that a contract like this usually would, and what happens to me if that situation comes up.

Bonus: Make it yours

Tell Claude which country and state you're in. Norms and protections change completely across borders.

This gets you to the point where you know exactly what you're signing and what to ask. Claude isn't a lawyer and neither am I, so if it's big money or long term, this is what makes an hour with a real one cheap instead of expensive.

Do this today: pull up the last thing you signed without reading. Better to know now.
