Make the Hardest Decision of Your Year Easier

Claude refuses to answer, works out what you actually value, then shows you which single criterion is doing all the work.

You're not undecided, your criteria are hidden.

Job or job. Stay or go. Buy or wait. You've talked about it with 5 people and every one of them gave you their answer, which is useful information about them and none about you.

The decision feels impossible because you're weighing options against criteria you've never written down. You can't compare two things on a list you can't see, so you go round again, and the round is the problem.

This is the one thing I'd never hand to AI to answer. I hand it the sorting and keep the deciding, which is the only version that works.

The prompts

1. Start here

Claude is explicitly not allowed to answer.

The criteria-first prompt
I'm deciding between [options]. Do not give me an answer. Ask me 6 questions to work out what I actually value here, then write my criteria back to me in priority order.

2. Go deeper

Shows you where the options really differ.

The scoring prompt
Now score each option against those criteria and show me where the gap is biggest. Tell me which single criterion is doing most of the work.

3. Bonus

The test for the option you keep flinching away from.

The avoided option prompt
Tell me what would have to be true for the option I've been avoiding to be the right one, and ask me whether I believe it.

Bonus: Make it yours

Add what you'd tell a friend to do in your situation. The gap between that and your own answer is usually the whole thing.

Do this today: write the criteria down, even if you decide nothing. A decision you can see is a decision you can make.
