The Blood-Test Translator: Finally Understand What Your Results Mean

You get your blood-test results back and they're a wall of acronyms, numbers, and reference ranges that mean nothing to you. Maybe there's a little "H" or "L" next to one of them and now you're mildly anxious with zero context. The appointment to explain it is weeks away, or lasted four minutes and left you more confused.
The gap here isn't your doctor's fault — it's that the results are written in clinical shorthand for other clinicians, not for you. And walking into an appointment not understanding your own numbers means you can't ask good questions, which means you leave with the same confusion you arrived with. Health literacy is power, and most of us are handed our results with none of it.
Claude can translate. Upload the results and it'll tell you, in plain English, what each marker actually measures, what your number sits alongside, and — crucially — the smart, specific questions to bring to your doctor. It will not diagnose you and it will not replace your GP. It makes you the most informed, best-prepared person in that appointment.

- Read this bit twice: this is a health-literacy tool, full stop. It helps you understand terminology and prepare good questions. It is not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a substitute for a qualified professional. Anything that looks concerning goes to your doctor — that's what Step 3 is for.
Step 1: Translate every marker into plain English
Upload your results (or type in the values with their reference ranges), then paste this.
You are a clear, patient health educator helping me understand my own blood-test results. You are NOT my doctor, you do NOT diagnose, and you always point me back to a qualified professional for interpretation and decisions. I've uploaded my results. For each marker in my results: 1. Name it in plain English and explain what it actually measures — what this part of my body/blood does — in one or two simple sentences, no jargon. 2. Tell me where my value sits relative to the reference range shown (within range / above / below), stating the numbers. 3. Explain, in general educational terms, what higher or lower levels of this marker can be associated with — clearly framed as "this is what this marker is generally about", NOT a claim about me. Rules: plain language a non-medical person understands. Never tell me what's "wrong" with me or what I "have". If something is outside its range, note it neutrally and flag it as a question for my doctor rather than interpreting it. If you're unsure what a marker or abbreviation is, say so.
What just happened: the wall of acronyms is now a readable summary where you actually understand what each line is measuring. That "H" that spiked your anxiety now has context — you know what the marker is about and that it's a question to raise, not a verdict to panic over.
Step 2: See the bigger picture (carefully)
Individual numbers are one thing; how they sit together is another. Ask Claude to give you the lay of the land — still without diagnosing.
Now give me a careful overview of my results as a whole, staying strictly educational and never diagnostic. 1. Group my markers into simple categories (e.g. "iron-related", "cholesterol/lipids", "blood sugar", "liver", "kidney", "blood cells") and give me a one-line plain-English summary of what each group is broadly telling me. 2. Point out which values are comfortably in range and which sit outside it, neutrally. 3. Note any markers that doctors often look at together, and explain why they're related — as general knowledge, not a reading of my case. 4. Be explicit about the limits of what results alone can tell anyone without the full clinical picture (my history, symptoms, medications). Do not speculate about diagnoses or causes. Anything notable becomes a question for my doctor in the next step.
What just happened: you've gone from a list of isolated numbers to understanding how they relate — the way a clinician glances at a panel and sees groupings, not just rows. And Claude has been honest about the limits: results without your full picture can't tell the whole story, which is exactly why the next step points you at a professional.
Step 3: Build your doctor's-appointment question list
This is the payoff. Turn everything into a short, sharp list of questions that makes your appointment ten times more useful.
Based on my results, prepare me to have a genuinely productive conversation with my doctor. 1. Give me a prioritised list of specific questions to ask — starting with anything outside its range and anything worth understanding better. Make them concrete (e.g. "My [marker] is [value], above the range of [range] — what could be contributing to that, and does it need follow-up?"). 2. Add a few smart general questions I might not think to ask (e.g. about retesting, trends over time, lifestyle factors, or whether anything should be monitored). 3. Suggest what to bring or mention that would help my doctor interpret these (symptoms, medications, family history, recent changes). 4. Keep it to a focused one-page list I can take in on my phone or printed. Remind me at the end that my doctor is the one to interpret these and make any decisions.
What just happened: you're walking into that appointment as the most prepared patient your doctor will see all day — with specific questions tied to your actual numbers instead of a vague "so, is everything okay?". Better questions get better answers, and a four-minute appointment suddenly does real work.
Bonus: Bonus 1: The trend tracker
One test is a snapshot; the story is in the trend. If you have older results, use this.
I've uploaded results from more than one date. Without diagnosing anything, show me how each marker has changed over time in a simple table (marker, each date's value, direction of change). Highlight which ones are trending up, down, or holding steady, and note which trends are the kind of thing worth asking my doctor to keep an eye on. Stay educational — you're showing me the pattern, not interpreting what it means for my health.
A single result can look alarming and be nothing, or look fine and be part of a worrying trend. Seeing the direction of travel over time is often far more informative than any single number — and it's a genuinely powerful thing to bring to your doctor.
Bonus: Bonus 2: The jargon decoder
For when one specific term is nagging at you.
Explain the blood marker [MARKER NAME] to me like I'm smart but have no medical background. What is it, what does the body use it for, why do doctors test it, what does the reference range roughly represent, and what are the general reasons it might read high or low? Keep it purely educational and general — not about my specific results — and tell me the questions someone might reasonably ask a doctor about it.
Sometimes you just want to understand one thing properly without the anxiety-spiral of a search engine. This gives you a calm, clear explanation of the single term that's been bugging you.
