The Home Handover Doc

Everything only you know about your house, written down once, including the things that stick, leak and need a trick.

Your house runs on knowledge only you have.

The tap that needs a firm turn. Bin night. Which switch does nothing. The window that won't lock unless you lift it first. You don't think about any of it, which is exactly why you can't explain it in a rush at the airport.

So you send 14 messages from overseas, and someone at home spends your holiday texting you about the hot water. That's your house holding you hostage from 12,000km away.

I wrote mine before a 6-week trip. It took 20 minutes and I got exactly one message the whole time.

The prompts

1. Start here

Pulls out the things you do without noticing you do them.

The room-by-room prompt
Ask me room by room what someone staying in my house would need to know, including the things I do automatically and wouldn't think to mention.

2. Go deeper

The troubleshooting list, before it's needed.

The troubleshooting prompt
Now ask me what breaks, sticks, leaks or needs a trick in this house, and turn my answers into a troubleshooting list a stranger could follow.

3. Bonus

One page, on the bench, done.

The printable doc prompt
Format all of this as a one-page doc I can print and leave on the bench, with emergency contacts at the top and each room as its own short section.

Bonus: Make it yours

Write alarm codes and keybox numbers on the printed copy by hand. Those don't belong in a chat window, ever.

Do this today: do the kitchen only. It's where most of the 'how does this work' questions come from.
